Family, friends and members of the community were present as Jimmy Harris was sworn in as Clarksdale’s new Ward 2 Commissioner at city hall on Nov. 2.
Harris won a special election after former Ward 2 Commissioner Ken Murphey died of a short illness. Harris’ term runs through June 30, 2025.
Judge Charlie Webster swore in Harris. Harris’ wife, Jean, was by his side and family members made the trip to Clarksdale for the ceremony.
“I thank everybody for coming,” Harris said. “Thanks to my good friends. Thanks for everybody supporting me.”
“I thank my God for everything,” Harris continued.” I pray I never let you down. I thank you so much.”
Mayor Chuck Espy acknowledged that Harris mentioned his faith.
“I’m very proud that you just acknowledged that,” Espy said.
The other commissioners congratulated Harris.
“Congratulations,” said Ward 1 Commissioner Bo Plunk. “All of this on this board, all of us with our knowledge, we’re willing to help you any way we can.”
Ward 3 Commissioner Willie Turner expressed similar sentiments. “Congratulations and welcome aboard,” Turner said. “Look forward to working with you.”
Ward 4 Commissioner Ed Seals concurred. “Welcome aboard and I look forward to working with you,” Seals said.
