Clarksdale, Mississippi—On July 27th, the Civic Auditorium buzzed with excitement as Conservative Deck 48 of Coahoma County hosted its second annual school supply drive. The event was a resounding success, featuring face painting, free haircuts, food, music, games, and more.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Carderius Haggan, the spokesperson for the organization. When asked how this event aligns with the mission of Conservative Deck 48, Haggan shared, “We strive to elevate and develop a system of economic, physical, and emotional security. We become better as individuals so that we can contribute more to our community.”
This philosophy was evident throughout the event. Despite a primary focus on individual well-being, the organization demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting the broader community. Families who attended were given backpacks filled with essential school supplies, including paper, folders, and writing utensils. Students also enjoyed free haircuts and could choose from a variety of cartoon face art designs while playing games and enjoying the music.
Haggan elaborated on the organization’s approach, stating, “We lead by example to show the people that there are constructive options available for us within our community. We encourage members of the organization to represent themselves well and to be conscious of their reputation, while knowing that’s just the surface of what being a good leader is. More importantly, we don’t pretend to be perfect people. We strive to do better.”
The event exemplified the value of unity in community building. By providing necessary supplies and a fun, supportive environment, Conservative Deck 48 not only helped prepare students for the upcoming school year but also fostered a sense of togetherness and mutual support. This annual drive serves as a testament to the power of community and the positive impact of local organizations dedicated to collective growth and improvement.
