Clarksdale, Mississippi – Nakia Cheatnum’s basketball journey has been nothing short of remarkable. As a senior forward at Alcorn State University, she’s made waves, but her roots run deep in Mississippi basketball, particularly under the guidance of Derrick Moore at Coahoma County High School. Known for her tenacity and skill, Cheatnum’s impact on the court has been evident from the start.
During her time at Coahoma County High School, Cheatnum made her mark by scoring over 1,000 points and grabbing over 900 rebounds. She consistently averaged a double-double, with 14.1 points, 12.1 rebounds, 2.7 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game, leading her team to a 29-4 record and a runner-up finish in the MHSAA Championship. Her outstanding performance earned her recognition as one of the top 50 girls in Mississippi, ranked #23. Cheatnum was named the MVP and Best Offensive Player for CCHS, along with an All-MHSAA First Team honor.
Cheatnum’s growth from a standout high school player to a collegiate force was evident in her junior season, where she averaged 10.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.3 steals per game. Her performance earned her MVP and Offensive Player awards, as well as a spot in the prestigious Mississippi All-Star game. As a freshman, she made history by recording Coahoma County High School’s first triple-double, setting the tone for her remarkable career.
After high school, Cheatnum continued to shine at Coahoma Community College, where she played two seasons and solidified her reputation. She was named to the NJCAA All-Region 23 Team and the MACCC All-Conference First Team. Her dominance on the court earned her Conference MVP honors as she led her team to a 21-7 record and a MACCC runner-up finish.
Now at Alcorn State, Cheatnum’s impact remains undeniable. Her stellar play was crucial in Alcorn’s deep run to the SWAC Championship game, where they fell just short to Jackson State. As a senior, Cheatnum is looking ahead to even greater heights. With aspirations of playing overseas or being drafted into the WNBA, her future is bright, and the basketball world is watching closely.
Off the court, Cheatnum is as dedicated to her academics as she is to the game. She majors in Agricultural Business and is a proud member of the National Honor Society. As the daughter of Nitosha Berry and with four brothers and numerous relatives who have attended Alcorn State, she carries a strong family legacy with her.
Nakia Cheatnum’s journey from high school to college basketball has been defined by hard work, determination, and a love for the game. Whether it’s dominating on the boards or preparing for a future in professional basketball, her story is far from over.
