Grammer receives Congressional honor

December 29, 2024 – Washington, DC.  Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, representing the Second Congressional District, State of Mississippi, honored Geraldine C. Grammer of Shelby on the floor of the 118th Congress.  Describing Grammer as a tenacious, self-motivated champion of education and community service, Thompson related her dedication to Bolivar County, surrounding counties and to the State of Mississippi.

A retired educator, Grammer redirected her life to one of service in assisting people everywhere.  The Fayette, Miss., native is presently the president of the Bolivar County Chapter the Alcorn State University (ASU) Alumni Association where she recently received the Frank Dobbins President of the Year award.  According the record, Grammer has devoted countless hours toward working with various chapter committees in helping parents and students in applying for college scholarships.  To that end, the chapter has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships, as well as provided students with gifts that they would need as college freshmen, as printers, laptops, hampers, luggage, towels and bedding and other college essentials.

Thompson went on to mention Grammer’s outlook and passion for education, citing her profound impact on Shelby and the surrounding communities.  “As a community and state leader, Grammer is focused on protecting the well-being of the community and ensuring that local students are prepared for college,” stated Thompson.  “Her selfless service in the Mississippi Delta and to the Bolivar County Chapter of the Alcorn State University Alumni Association are commendable,” stated Thompson.

In addition to her duties as president of the local ASU chapter, Grammer is also actively involved in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®, Chi Mu Omega Chapter where she serves as the official hostess of the chapter and chairman of the Social and Hospitality Committee and the Founders’ Day Committee.  She serves as the co-chairman of the Enhance Our Environment initiative, a member of the Awards, Bylaws, Protocol, Rituals, Public Relations and the Mississippi Health Project Committee.  

Grammer is also the vice-president of the Bolivar County Long Term Disaster Recovery Committee and a member of First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Mound Bayou.

“I have been tremendously blessed; and, I truly feel that it is incumbent on me to give back to society,” said Grammer.  “I am so appreciative of Congressman Thompson for recognizing my work here in the Mississippi Delta with this great honor,” Grammer continued.

Grammer is the wife of retired educator, Nathaniel Grammer and the mother of two adult sons, Cedric and Colter, four precocious grandchildren and two daughters-in-law.
