Clarksdale, MS – The community came together this past weekend for the 2nd annual Clarksdale Walk It Out, an event designed to encourage healthier lifestyles, promote better eating habits, and strengthen Clarksdale’s commitment to community wellness.

This year’s event drew a wide range of participants, including community leaders, students, and local organizations. Clarksdale School District Superintendent Dr. Tonya Matthews was in attendance, showing her support for the initiative.

The program was directed by Dr. Shorye Durrett, M.D., a 1986 Salutatorian of Clarksdale High School who has gone on to serve as an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Her leadership brought a special connection to the community while highlighting the importance of education, health, and giving back.

Returning participants such as Ernie Cooke of Clarksdale High School and Sanya Moore of Lee Academy were recognized for their continued dedication, having also been present at last year’s inaugural walk. Student and youth involvement was strong, with the CHS Beats Club and the Clarksdale Panthers taking part in the event.

A highlight of the day was the recognition of Josephine Rhymes, who won the award for the most steps recorded since last year’s event. With over 1 million steps logged, she earned a $50 Amazon gift card and a prize bag sponsored by the University of Louisville.

The event not only encouraged physical activity but also served as a reminder that small steps can lead to big changes in health and wellness. As participants walked side by side, the spirit of community, perseverance, and a shared vision for a healthier Clarksdale shined bright.
