Clarksdale, Mississippi – Almetrius Smith Jr.’s journey in football began at the tender age of six, playing for the Lumberjacks. It was during those formative years that he fell in love with the game, a passion that has since propelled him to remarkable achievements. From his days as an offensive lineman at Clarksdale High School to starting for Jackson State University (JSU), Smith’s story is one of perseverance, hard work, and unwavering determination.

Smith’s high school career at Clarksdale High School was filled with accolades, including being named Offensive Lineman of the Year and earning All-District honors. His outstanding performance even landed him a nomination to the Mississippi All-Star Game, cementing his status as a standout player.

After high school, Smith continued to build on his success at Coahoma Community College, where he was named to the All-MAAC Second Team during his two years of eligibility. It was during his time at Coahoma that his talent caught the attention of coaches at Jackson State University.

In his first year at JSU, Smith faced a significant challenge: academic ineligibility forced him to redshirt. Instead of letting this setback deter him, Smith used the time to hone his technique and fundamentals. “I had to work even harder to earn my spot on the team,” Smith recalled.

That hard work paid off. By the following spring, Smith rose from third-string center to starting center in just a matter of weeks. Since then, he has started in 10 games for JSU this season, missing only a few due to injury. Now, as the starting center, he’s preparing to help lead his team in the Cricket Celebration Bowl on December 14 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Smith’s presence on the offensive line has been instrumental in JSU’s success. With the #1-ranked offense and offensive line in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Smith and his teammates have powered JSU to a nine-game winning streak and the title of SWAC Champions.

The stakes are high for the Cricket Celebration Bowl, where JSU, ranked #15 nationally, will face South Carolina State. This rematch carries added significance as JSU seeks redemption for their 31-10 loss in 2021. However, JSU gained confidence with a commanding 37-7 victory over South Carolina State in the 2023 MEAC-SWAC Championship.

Reflecting on his journey, Smith expressed heartfelt gratitude for the people who have supported him along the way. “I want to thank my former coaches from pee wee up to college, especially Tyrone Smith and Coach Henry Johnson, and my beautiful mother, Aisha Ragland.” Smith also credits his two brothers, Aikee and Kenyalla Matthews, for their unwavering encouragement.

As Smith prepares to take the field in the national championship, he represents not just his team but the hopes of his hometown of Clarksdale and the many coaches and mentors who have shaped his path. Smith’s story is a testament to resilience and the rewards of hard work—a legacy that will undoubtedly inspire others for years to come.

Congratulations, Almetrius, and good luck from your hometown, Clarksdale, Mississippi!
