Clarksdale, Mississippi – Our community is mourning the loss of a beloved grocery store owner who tragically lost his life during a violent attempted robbery. The Clarksdale Police Department (CPD) disclosed that this heart-wrenching incident unfolded around 5 p.m. on March 29, at the D&T Supermarket on North State Street.
Law enforcement officials revealed that an armed assailant forcefully entered the store, wielding a firearm and targeting an employee behind the counter. Despite managing to steal money, the perpetrator callously unleashed a barrage of gunfire, striking the owner before fleeing the scene. Despite receiving prompt medical attention and being rushed to a nearby hospital, the victim succumbed to their injuries.
Mayor Chuck Espy took to social media, utilizing Facebook as a platform to implore residents to maintain calm amidst the chaos. Espy’s heartfelt plea for peace resonated deeply with the community as he articulated the profound impact of such violence, stating, “It hits home when it’s in your backyard, and I’d like peace in our city. I’m asking God to cover the City of Clarksdale. I’m asking for violence to stop.”
Echoing residents’ sentiments, the CPD swiftly condemned the heinous act as “a senseless crime,” highlighting the pressing need for justice and closure. Authorities implored the public to come forward with any relevant information that could aid in the ongoing investigation.
