Clarksdale, Mississippi
– The Bionic Panthers are proving that hard work and determination pay off in their second year participating in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). Despite still considering themselves a “rookie” team, the Panthers have achieved remarkable milestones, earning a coveted spot at the upcoming Mississippi FTC State Championship, tentatively scheduled for February 28–March 1, 2025, at Ole Miss.

Building More Than Robots

Comprising nine dedicated members in grades 9–12, the Bionic Panthers’ efforts extend far beyond building and programming robots. Guided by lead coach Mrs. Sarah Trimm and assistant coach Mr. Darrius Gates, the team also develops budgets, crafts marketing plans, and engages in community and engineering outreach activities. Their commitment to these well-rounded skills reflects the true spirit of the FTC program, which emphasizes innovation, teamwork, and community impact.

Journey to the State Championship

The Panthers’ season has been filled with growth and achievements. On December 7, 2024, the team competed at their first Qualifying Event in Tupelo, MS. While they did not advance to the playoffs, they earned 2nd Place for the Motivate Award, which recognizes teams for their spirit and ability to inspire others.

Their perseverance paid off at their next Qualifying Event in Grenada, MS, on January 18, 2025. After competing in six matches, they placed high enough to advance to the Alliance Playoff matches. Although they were eliminated after two playoff rounds, the team’s hard work and dedication were recognized with 2nd Place for the prestigious Inspire Award.

This award celebrates teams that serve as ambassadors for the FIRST program and inspire others with their enthusiasm, professionalism, and knowledge. Winning the Inspire Award also secured the Panthers the “Golden Ticket” to the Mississippi FTC State Championship—a milestone that demonstrates their excellence both on and off the field.

Community Support and Fundraising

The Bionic Panthers have received tremendous support from their community, including a $500 donation from Dave Houston. Houston, known for his famous popcorn, plans to host fundraisers to further support the team as they prepare for the state competition. Contributions like these are vital for covering expenses and ensuring the team can continue to thrive.

Looking Ahead

As the Bionic Panthers gear up for the Mississippi FTC State Championship, their journey serves as a testament to perseverance, teamwork, and the power of community support. With the guidance of their experienced mentors, including lead programmer Chester Hollins, and the drive of their passionate members, the Panthers are ready to make their mark on the state stage.

Whether on the robotics field or in the community, the Bionic Panthers exemplify what it means to rise to the challenge and inspire others along the way.
