Clarksdale, Mississippi – For the past two years, Dr. Virginia Young has served as Superintendent of Coahoma County School District (CCSD), and her leadership has left an indelible mark on the district. A firm believer in the power of education, Dr. Young has consistently prioritized academics, and under her guidance, CCSD has maintained a steady C average for the past two years. The district came within just 16 points of a B average last year, a testament to the improvements made during her tenure.

A native of Newton, Mississippi, Dr. Young came to Coahoma County from the Newton High School District, where she built a reputation as a transformative leader. Now, as the head of CCSD, she has ushered in a new era with her slogan “Ready to Rise,” a rallying call for the district to achieve new heights. Her vision is captured in the district’s motto, “The New County,” which signifies that this is a time of renewal, growth, and progress for CCSD.

Dr. Young’s deep love for both sports and the students in her care has made her a beloved figure in the Coahoma community. She is often seen attending school events, cheering on the district’s sports teams, and building strong relationships with students, staff, and parents. She has also cultivated a positive working relationship with Dr. Matthews, Superintendent of the Clarksdale Municipal School District (CMSD), and the two leaders collaborate regularly to enhance the educational opportunities for students across both districts.

At the heart of Dr. Young’s leadership philosophy is her personal motto: “Do unto others as you want them to do unto you.” This principle, inspired by her mother and influential figures like Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, and former President Barack Obama, guides her every decision. She seeks to uplift others while pushing for academic excellence in CCSD. Her ultimate goal is clear: to help Coahoma County fulfill its mission of providing each child with a high-quality education in a safe, nurturing environment, and to raise the district’s accountability grade to an A.

Dr. Young’s faith also plays a vital role in her life and leadership. Her favorite Bible verses, Jeremiah 29:11 (“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to give you hope and a future”) and Philippians 4:13 (“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”), reflect her belief in a higher purpose and her commitment to empowering students to reach their full potential.

In addition to her academic achievements, Dr. Young’s contributions to Coahoma County’s sports programs have also been recognized. In 2022, she was awarded a State Championship ring for CCHS’s victory in the state championship, a proud moment for both the district and the community.

As she continues to lead CCSD, Dr. Young remains focused on her goal of ensuring that every child in Coahoma County receives a world-class education. With her visionary leadership and passion for student success, the district is truly ready to rise to new heights.
