Clarksdale, Mississippi – This year, Century Funeral Home marked its 100th anniversary with a series of themed events to honor its century of service to the Clarksdale community. As part of these celebrations, the funeral home hosted a community spades tournament, bringing together families and friends for an exciting day of competition and connection.

The tournament saw 26 teams competing for the top spot, with Tarnika Watson/Bush and Skylar Gilliam securing first place. The Broom family took second place, making it a memorable event for all involved.

The Inspiration Behind the Tournament
When asked why the funeral home decided to host a spades tournament, owner Chuck Espy shared, “We theme out each month, and the Century team members decided to do a spades tournament for the month of November before Thanksgiving. And we love the game.”

The event exemplified Century Funeral Home’s commitment to being more than just a funeral service provider.

A New Annual Tradition?
With the success of the tournament, it’s likely this will become a yearly event. “Yes—more than likely because people want the bragging rights of the trophy,” Espy said.

Century Funeral Home prides itself on bringing the community together in meaningful ways. “We do things to bring the community together, not for funerals but to bring love and peace to the community by bringing everyone together for love and fun,” Espy emphasized.
For 100 years, Century Funeral Home has served as a cornerstone of Clarksdale, supporting families through life’s most challenging moments. With initiatives like the spades tournament, they continue to build their legacy by fostering unity, joy, and community spirit.

Congratulations to Tarnika Watson/Bush and Skylar Gilliam, the winners of this year’s tournament, and to Century Funeral Home for 100 years of dedication and love!
