Clarksdale, Mississippi – As they approach their 40th class reunion, the Clarksdale High School (CHS) Class of 1985 is celebrating a remarkable tradition that has made a difference in the lives of many young Wildcats. For the past seven years, they’ve awarded scholarships to CHS seniors who have either overcome hardship or achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher. This impactful initiative is led by a dedicated committee, including Elisa Howard, Carmen Williams Ellis, Rosie Grayson, Tanya Vessell, and Marvin Reddick, who have tirelessly worked to inspire and uplift the next generation of students.

This scholarship program was created in honor of their late classmate Mary Brown Bonds and commemorates three other classmates who have passed away. Each year, the CHS Class of 1985 comes together to honor their memory by supporting a deserving senior with a $5,000 scholarship, helping these young adults to pursue their dreams despite the challenges they may face.

Among the notable past recipients is CoVal, who received the scholarship two years ago. She had endured the loss of her mother, godfather, and grandmother, yet continued to thrive academically and personally. Another former recipient, D’Aida Ruffin, was the very first scholarship winner and went on to graduate from college, embodying the scholarship’s mission to empower students through education.

Beyond providing scholarships, the committee also gives back to CHS seniors by offering guidance and mentorship, helping to inspire them as they prepare to embark on new journeys. For the past four years, they’ve also hosted a senior class luncheon, creating a welcoming space for these soon-to-be graduates to connect and celebrate their accomplishments.

This year, as part of their 40th reunion, the Class of 1985 aims to raise $40,000 in scholarship funds. With a total goal of $100,000 in donations, they have introduced a friendly competition among the graduating classes, encouraging each to contribute to this meaningful cause. The scholarship fund has been supported by countless donors over the years, each of whom has played a role in sustaining this legacy of giving.

The CHS Class of 1985’s ongoing commitment is a testament to the power of community and connection. Through their support, they continue to honor their past, empower the present, and invest in a brighter future for CHS seniors.
