Clarksdale, MS – The Clarksdale Carnegie Public Library recently wrapped up its annual Summer Reading Party and Pop-Up Shop, a vibrant community event aimed at promoting literacy among children. With the theme “Color Our World,” the summer program ran from June 3 to July 3 and welcomed students ages 2 to 14.
Led by Mrs. O, the children’s librarian in her third year of hosting the summer event, the program enrolled 100 students. Although only 72 attended the final celebration—many being out of town for the holiday—the atmosphere remained lively and educational.
Several pop-up shops were set up during the event, including one by debutante Raylan McCastle, who proudly showcased her cookie shop. Community engagement was strong, with members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in attendance. Notable attendees included:
- Sharon Campbell, President of Zeta Phi Beta
- Marylin Reece, Chairperson
- Ruthie Johnson, Chairperson
- Darlene Page-Clark, Committee Service Chairperson
- Augusta Strong, Debutante Co-Chairperson
- Members of the Zeta Amicae auxiliary
Augusta Strong shared that 52 debutantes will be presented this December, many of whom are actively participating in volunteer work throughout the community.
The Zetas and their debutantes contribute to numerous service initiatives, including:
- Trunk or Treat
- Care Station Back-to-School Giveaway
- Annual Christmas Drive
One of the event highlights was a “Color Race,” where children wore plastic coverings and joyfully raced while being sprayed with colorful paint—bringing the “Color Our World” theme to life.
“It was a fun summer for the kids,” said Mrs. O. “I really enjoyed them and hope next year will be even better.”
Through engaging activities, creative expression, and community partnerships, the Clarksdale Carnegie Library continues to be a cornerstone for youth literacy and development in Clarksdale.
