Clarksdale, Mississippi – Tomorrow is a pivotal day for the city of Clarksdale as residents head to the polls to cast their votes in the municipal primary election. After months of campaigning, speeches, and community outreach, the power now shifts to the voters to decide who will lead the city for the next four years.

A total of 27 candidates are on the ballot, vying for five key positions on the Clarksdale Board of Mayor and Commissioners, including the seat for mayor. This year’s primary is a critical step in determining the direction Clarksdale will take, with decisions made on Tuesday potentially reshaping the city’s leadership and policies.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, and residents are strongly encouraged to make their voices heard.

This is a party primary election, with 23 candidates running as Democrats and four individuals running as Independents, which allows them to bypass the party primary process and automatically appear on the General Election ballot set for Tuesday, June 3.

To win their race in the primary, a candidate must secure at least 50 percent of the vote plus one. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the top two vote-getters will advance to a Primary Runoff Election on Tuesday, April 22.

In races where no Independent candidates are competing, the winner of the Democratic primary will be declared the overall winner. However, if a Democratic candidate does have an Independent opponent, they will move on to face off in the General Election.

The candidates who ultimately win in the General Election will officially take office on Tuesday, July 1.

This election is more than a civic duty—it’s an opportunity to take part in shaping the future of Clarksdale. Every vote matters, and your voice counts. Make a plan to vote, encourage your neighbors to do the same, and help build a stronger Clarksdale.
