(Clarksdale, Mississippi) – Coahoma Community College (CCC) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Larry Williams as the new Head Football Coach. A seasoned leader with a championship pedigree, Williams brings decades of coaching expertise and a steadfast commitment to the development of student-athletes to the Tigers’ program.
Williams, a native of Mississippi, comes to Coahoma with an impressive record of accomplishments. During his tenure as Head Coach at Hinds Community College, he amassed a remarkable 33-19 (.634) record, demonstrating consistent excellence on the field. Under his leadership, Hinds achieved multiple national rankings, including a final standing of 8th in the NJCAA in 2019, and earned a berth in the prestigious Graphic Edge Bowl. Additionally, Williams has guided countless players to individual accolades and helped many advance to four-year institutions to continue their academic and athletic journeys. In 2021, Coach Williams finished runner-up in the state championship game against Northwest during his time as the head coach for Hinds.
In sharing his vision for Coahoma football, Williams emphasized his dedication to both athletic success and personal growth. “I am honored to lead this program and eager to build on its proud traditions,” said Williams. “My goal is to develop student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom while taking this team to new heights.”
Williams’ appointment marks the beginning of a new era for the Tigers. With a career spanning decades, Williams has a rich history in Mississippi football, both as a player and coach. As a defensive end at Mississippi State University, he led the Bulldogs in sacks during the 1994 and 1995 seasons and was named the team’s Most Valuable Defensive Player in the Peach Bowl. His leadership on the field extended into his professional career with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens and the Scottish Claymores of the World League of American Football.
Dr. Valmadge T. Towner, President of Coahoma Community College, expressed his enthusiasm for Williams’ arrival. “Coach Williams embodies the values and leadership qualities we seek in our athletic programs. His ability to inspire excellence, both academically and athletically, aligns perfectly with the mission of Coahoma Community College. We are excited to see the positive impact he will have on our student-athletes and the entire Coahoma community.”
Mrs. Selina Reid, the Athletic Director, shared her thoughts on the new hire, stating, “Echoing our President Dr. Valmadge T. Towner’s excitement and warm welcome, Coach Larry Williams’ profound connection to the Mississippi Delta positions him as an exceptional leader for our football program. He brings a wealth of coaching experience and an unwavering commitment to fostering the academic, athletic, and personal growth of our student-athletes. His visionary leadership is poised to make a lasting, positive impact on both our student-athletes and the broader Coahoma community.”
Williams’ coaching career has seen remarkable highlights, including helping Hinds reach multiple playoff appearances and guiding Mississippi Delta Community College to an NJCAA National Championship as a player. As a coach, he has consistently developed high-performing teams, with numerous players earning All-State and All-Region honors under his tutelage.
A press conference introducing Coach Williams will be held on Monday, January 13, 2025, at 10:00 AM. This event will provide an opportunity for media and community members to meet Coach Williams and learn more about his vision for the program. Additional details will be provided by the Office of Communications & Marketing Department.
