Clarksdale, Mississippi – Coach Derrick Moore of Coahoma County is on the brink of achieving a monumental milestone—850 career wins as a basketball coach. Known for his humble demeanor and remarkable coaching record, Moore’s name has become synonymous with success in local sports. His incredible accomplishments speak volumes about his dedication to the game and the students he serves.
Throughout his career, Moore has led his teams to seven High School State Championships and five Junior High Championships, cementing his status as a pillar in Coahoma County athletics. He’s been named “Coach of the Year” eight times, a testament to his ability to guide his teams to consistent success. Yet, despite these impressive achievements, Moore is quick to deflect personal praise. After one of his “Coach of the Year” honors, he humbly stated, “The honor goes to my coaching staff,” underscoring his belief in the power of collaboration.
Moore’s journey in coaching began as an assistant under the legendary Isiah Peterson. Learning from one of the best in the business, Moore sharpened his skills, which would eventually lead him to his own standout career. While basketball may be where he’s most recognized, Moore’s contributions to Coahoma County extend far beyond the court. He also serves as the track and cross country coach, bus driver, and teacher, showcasing his unwavering commitment to the students and the school.
All seven of Moore’s state titles have been achieved with boys’ basketball teams, yet his influence reaches both the boys’ and girls’ programs. His coaching staff is a family affair, with his brother Daryl Moore, his son Derrick Moore Jr., and his cousin Jonnetta Williams all playing key roles. Williams also serves as the County Junior High Girls Basketball coach, further expanding the family’s impact on Coahoma County sports.
As Coach Moore approaches his 850th win, it’s clear that his legacy is built on more than just numbers. His deep respect for teamwork, his devotion to the development of young athletes, and his dedication to his family and community have earned him admiration far and wide. While the Coahoma County community eagerly awaits this next milestone, Moore’s focus remains where it’s always been—on the success and growth of his players and the teamwork that has carried them this far.
