Clarksdale, Mississippi — In a historic and heartfelt victory, Columbus Russell Jr. has been elected as the youngest mayor in Jonestown, Mississippi’s history. At a time when many small towns are seeking new leadership and direction, Russell brings youthful energy, unwavering determination, and a deep love for his community.
“It feels surreal,” Russell said, reflecting on his record-breaking win. “I ran for mayor because I saw the need to better our community and help our citizens feel heard and more valued.”
Russell’s campaign wasn’t just about winning votes — it was about building trust. His focus on transparency, accessibility, and meaningful progress resonated with voters of all ages. His plans include attracting valuable resources and funding to Jonestown, improving the town’s infrastructure, and generating new streams of income.
Among his top priorities is enhancing the town’s appearance. “The number one problem I plan to start solving is beautifying the town,” he said. “How our town looks impacts how we feel — and how others see us.”
Russell’s vision for the future includes creating opportunities for both the youth and the elderly. “I plan to bring in new and more positive activities for our youth — giving them a reason to stay, to engage, and to dream,” he explained. “For our elders, I want to provide transportation and develop programs to keep them active and supported.”
Though he’s now in public office, Russell’s dreams began in the world of business. “Growing up, I wanted to be a businessman,” he shared. “And in many ways, this is just an extension of that — running a town takes vision, management, and heart.”
His path to leadership wasn’t without hurdles. “I faced many challenges that tried to steer me away from running. People told me I was doing too much for a ‘small town campaign.’ But I had a race to win, and it all paid off,” he said.
To the people of Jonestown, Russell offers heartfelt gratitude. “Thank you for your votes and for allowing me the opportunity to serve our community. I’m grateful that you all believe in me, and I’m just one call away.”
He also credits his faith and support system for helping him reach this moment. “Special shout out to God — without Him none of this would’ve been possible. Next, my parents for their love and support, then my best friend Tekia Rice for sticking with me through it all. And a huge shout out to the town of Jonestown for electing me as their next mayor.”
Russell hopes his story inspires others to dream big, especially young people in small towns. “Don’t quit. Keep positive people around you, and never be too prideful to listen,” he advised. “My father always told me, ‘It’s not what you do — it’s how you do it.’ Always keep going.”
As he steps into office, Columbus Russell Jr. is not just making history — he’s making a promise: to lead with purpose, serve with integrity, and build a stronger future for Jonestown.
