Clarksdale, Mississippi– Commissioner Jimmy Harris found himself unexpectedly involved in a controversy after being named in a now-deleted Facebook post on the Clarksdale Voices page. The post, made by Meriwether McGettigan, included false claims about Commissioner Ed Seals as part of a story highlighting three young men participating in a Clarksdale cleanup event.

Sources suggest that McGettigan allegedly organized the cleanup as a photo opportunity to discredit Seals, whose daughter is currently campaigning for his seat.

In a text message to Commissioner Seals, Harris explained that he had received a random call from a woman asking for help with trash collection. He expressed regret for unknowingly participating in an event with hidden motives and emphasized that he had no intention of harming Seals’ reputation. Harris also reaffirmed his respect for Seals and their close working relationship, stressing that he would never intentionally undermine him.

Both Harris and Seals have a history of collaboration, working to improve their respective wards and consistently supporting local residents.

Sources also informed The Clarksdale Advocate that McGettigan is a political operative with a record of contributing to campaigns in Clarksdale’s predominantly African American wards.

This incident underscores the challenges public officials face during election season and the importance of maintaining transparency and integrity in local politics.
