Clarksdale, Mississippi – Thomas Williams, better known as “ESPNTOM,” has been a staple in the Coahoma County sports community since 2016. His journey in basketball began as an announcer for Coahoma Aggie basketball games, but his passion and dedication quickly propelled him into coaching and community leadership.

From Announcer to Coach

Williams’ involvement in the game took a significant turn when Coahoma Aggie coach Edward Thomas invited him to join the coaching staff. That season, the team reached the state championship, facing an undefeated West Tally High School team. Though they fell short, the experience ignited Williams’ love for coaching.

The following year, he took on the role of junior varsity coach and led his team to a perfect 12-0 season in 2019. As an assistant coach, he contributed to Coahoma Aggie’s historic 26-game winning streak before falling in the second round of the playoffs. During this time, Williams coined the slogan “We Want All the Smoke,” which gained national recognition for its bold statement of the team’s confidence.

A New Chapter at Coahoma County High School

When Coahoma Aggie closed its doors, legendary coach Derrick Moore brought Williams to Coahoma County High School as the team’s stat keeper. In his first season, the team won the state championship, solidifying his reputation as an integral part of the program.

During the 2022-23 season, Williams introduced the slogan “First 48,” declaring after two early losses that the team wouldn’t lose again. Coahoma County went on a 27-game winning streak and captured another state championship. The “First 48” slogan became a rallying cry, with the team’s yellow caution tape celebration gaining national attention.

In their first year in the 3A classification, Williams coined the slogan “The New Kids on the Block,” symbolizing the team’s entry into a higher division. The team made it to the state championship game, falling to Booneville, but the slogan once again captured national attention.

ESPNTOM: More Than Just a Name

Williams’ nickname, “ESPNTOM,” reflects his love for ESPN and his dedication to highlighting local athletes. His tireless promotion of student-athletes has earned him connections with college coaches from institutions such as Alcorn State University, Mississippi Valley State, the University of Memphis, and Coahoma Community College. Through stats, interviews, and highlights, Williams helps student-athletes gain exposure and recognition.

Beyond his work with Coahoma County, Williams played a pivotal role in organizing and announcing the first Delta Showdown All-Star Game. His energetic commentary as the voice of the Panthers ensures that young athletes receive the recognition they deserve. His passion for sports is deeply personal, driven by the joy of seeing players he’s promoted receive attention from college recruiters.

Champion On and Off the Court

Williams has also been a leader in the community, holding a back-to-school drive for the past three years to support local students. His success extends to youth basketball, where he led the Mississippi Celtics to back-to-back championships in the Mississippi Celtics Youth Basketball League. His reputation as a respected sports journalist for The Clarksdale Advocate was solidified when he won the 2024 Sports Reporter of the Year award, showcasing his skill and dedication in covering local sports and athletics.

In addition to his local impact, Williams interviewed NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, a testament to his growing influence in the basketball world.

Thomas Williams, aka ESPNTOM, is far more than a coach, announcer, or stat keeper. He’s a key figure in Mississippi high school basketball, ensuring every deserving athlete gets their moment in the spotlight. His impact on and off the court continues to inspire the next generation of players and fans alike.
