Clarksdale, Mississippi – Today, Mayor Chuck Espy spoke to employees of the city to announce that he will not seek re-election as Clarksdale’s mayor. After eight years of service, Mayor Espy expressed his gratitude for Clarksdalians who have played a key role in the city’s resurgence and forward-looking plan for his final six months in office.
After more than seven years of hard work and partnerships, Clarksdale’s reserve fund grew for the first time in more than 50 years. This growth was the result of sustained focus on balancing Clarksdale’s budget.
Clarksdale went from having the worst board meetings to the most peaceful and harmonious environment in the city’s history.
“My goal was to ensure that Clarksdale’s next mayor has a strong financial start that enables the city to prosper for the future, ” said Espy. “I came into a city in financial trouble. Now, I am leaving behind a city with a better credit rating and millions in reserves. I am satisfied the next Mayor and City Council will have all the financial tools it needs to take Clarksdale to the next level.”
