Clarksdale, MS – With sunshine overhead and lines cast in the water, senior citizens from across Coahoma County gathered to enjoy a day of laughter, fellowship, and fishing at the 10th Annual Senior Citizen Fishing Derby.

The event, held earlier this week, was founded a decade ago by Kendrick Travis, now the Youth Outreach Director for Coahoma County. Long before stepping into his current role, Travis saw an opportunity to bring joy to the community’s elder residents through a pastime many hold dear—fishing.

“I started this because I know the senior citizens love to fish, and I wanted to give them something fun and relaxing to do,” said Travis. “I love seeing the smiles on their faces and just watching them have a good time.”

This year’s derby featured ideal weather, a stocked pond with over 500 pounds of fish, and an enthusiastic turnout of 35 to 50 participants. For many, the event wasn’t just about the catch—it was about reconnecting with a beloved hobby and one another.

Mary Mitchell, one of the excited anglers, had a particularly memorable day, reeling in eight fish. “I’m so pleased,” she said, grinning. “I haven’t caught a fish since 2005!”

Travis, who still gets a kick out of preparing the pond each year, shared, “It’s fun putting the fish in the pond and then letting them fish. It’s something simple, but it brings so much joy.”

Next up for the Coahoma County Youth Outreach is the Youth Fishing Rodeo, scheduled for July. After that, the pond will open to the broader community. However, all participants must comply with Mississippi state fishing laws, including having a valid fishing license.

The Senior Citizen Fishing Derby continues to be a cherished annual tradition, thanks to Kendrick Travis’ vision and commitment to community engagement—hooking happiness, one cast at a time.
