Clarksdale, Mississippi- History was made Friday night as the Coahoma County Junior High School (CCJHS) Boys Red Panthers participated in the Middle School State Tournament for the first time in the school’s history. Under the leadership of second-year Head Coach Eddie Taylor, the Red Panthers showcased their grit and determination, making a remarkable run in Moorhead, Mississippi, at Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC).
The Red Panthers, who clinched the DVC Tournament title last year, entered this season with high hopes despite losing key players who advanced to the high school level. Coach Taylor and his team regrouped, worked hard, and earned their place in the state tournament.
On Friday night, the Panthers delivered an impressive performance, defeating the Charleston Tigers 34-15 in their opening game. However, their championship aspirations came to an end on Saturday in a thrilling overtime battle against Tunica, where they narrowly lost 28-24.
Coach Taylor expressed immense pride in his team’s achievements this season. “I’m proud of these boys for making it this far,” he said. “Being the first team to make it to the state tournament is a huge success for this program.”
The Red Panthers finished their season with a 12-5 record, setting a new standard for future teams. While they will lose six players to the high school level next year, Coach Taylor is confident in the talent coming up from the sixth grade. “We have younger players ready to step up and fill those roles next year,” he added.
This season marks a significant milestone for CCJHS basketball, proving that hard work and dedication can lead to historic achievements. The future is bright for the Red Panthers as they aim to build on this year’s success.
