Clarksdale, Mississippi – As February begins, so does Black History Month—a time dedicated to honoring the rich heritage, achievements, and contributions of Black individuals throughout history. Established by historian Carter G. Woodson as Negro History Week in 1926, the celebration expanded into a full month in 1976, gaining national recognition as an essential period of reflection and education.
The first day of Black History Month serves as a reminder of the resilience, innovation, and cultural influence of Black communities across generations. It marks the beginning of 29 days (or 28 in non-leap years) devoted to learning about leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, and countless others who have shaped history. It also offers an opportunity to highlight present-day changemakers who continue to break barriers in fields such as politics, science, business, sports, and the arts.
Each year, Black History Month carries a theme designated by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). This theme helps focus attention on specific aspects of Black history and culture, emphasizing ongoing struggles and triumphs. Schools, organizations, and communities across the country recognize the month with educational programs, events, and artistic expressions that celebrate Black excellence and resilience.
Beyond recognition, the first day of Black History Month encourages individuals to take action—whether by supporting Black-owned businesses, reading literature by Black authors, or engaging in conversations about racial justice and equity. It is a time to honor the past while striving for a more inclusive and just future.
As February unfolds, let this month serve as an opportunity to deepen our understanding of Black history, appreciate its influence on American and global society, and commit to uplifting the voices and stories that have too often been overlooked.
