Clarksdale, Mississippi– In a monumental moment for Clarksdale High School, James Washington has signed a baseball scholarship with Coahoma Community College (CCC), becoming the first CHS baseball player to sign such a scholarship in 34 years. Standing at 5’9” and weighing 200 pounds, Washington plays catcher, pitcher, and third base and has built an impressive high school career.

Over 27 games, Washington has maintained a .299 batting average, with 26 hits and 9 RBIs. His dedication to the game has been evident since he started playing at the age of five, beginning with coach-pitch leagues. His youth league coach reflected on Washington’s journey, recalling how the young athlete once transitioned from shortstop to catcher when the team needed someone to fill the position. “I asked him if he could do it, and he didn’t hesitate. He studied films and became one of the best catchers we’ve had,” the coach remarked.

Former CHS baseball coach Joe Kemp, who also served as athletic director and football coach, spoke on Washington’s hard work and determination to rise through the ranks. “He worked his way up from being a freshman to one of the most dedicated players I’ve seen.”

CHS Superintendent Dr. Matthews also shared congratulatory remarks, celebrating the historic achievement and Washington’s perseverance. Head coach Quavante McGregory praised Washington as a leader, emphasizing his potential for a bright future in baseball and beyond.

The signing ceremony was filled with pride and emotion as family, friends, former coaches, and classmates gathered to celebrate Washington’s accomplishment. During his speech, Washington expressed gratitude for his journey and the people who supported him along the way.

“I just want to thank God, my parents, my family, friends, classmates, principals, and coaches. If I can make it, you can too. Always keep God first, and don’t let anything or anybody distract you. I’ve learned a lot from my dad, brothers, and coaches. With that being said, I’m taking my talents to CCC,” Washington said.

This milestone not only marks a turning point for James Washington but also serves as an inspiration to his peers and a proud moment for the Clarksdale community.
