Jonestown, MS – Residents of Jonestown came together on August 30 to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the town’s new basketball court, marking a milestone of community pride and unity.
Speaking at the ceremony, organizer Columbus Russell said the project reflected the true spirit of the town. “Today reminded us of the true spirit of Jonestown. We came together as one community, and the results speak for itself. The new court is more than just paint and concrete — it is a symbol of pride, unity, and opportunity for our kids and future kids.”
The project was made possible through the efforts of local residents and businesses. Special thanks were extended to Alex 79 Gas Station for donating burgers and hot dogs, as well as to Margret Williams, Earnestine Maddox, Kyna Russell, Bonita Williams, and Derrick Russell. Many community volunteers also contributed their time to bring the project to completion.
Additional recognition was given to Jarvis, who designed the court, and Decerdion Johnson, who prepared food for the event.
Russell shared his hopes for the court’s impact on the community. “My hope and prayer is this court becomes a place filled with love, laughter, and achievement. What a powerful way to start Jonestown Weekend. Let us carry this forward, be safe, and have a good time and keep everybody safe. Together, we are building more than a court — we are building a community.”
The ribbon-cutting also served as the kickoff to Jonestown Weekend, leaving residents proud of their new court and optimistic about what it represents for the future of the community.
