Learning basketball starts with some of the basic fundamentals. That was what Coahoma County High School basketball coach Derrick Moore and his assistants taught children on Saturday morning. It was the first Derrick Moore basketball camp, which took place in the Derrick Moore Gymnasium at Coahoma County Jr./Sr. High School.
“We wanted to make sure they knew how to hold a ball when they shoot the basketball,” Moore said. “We wanted to make sure they knew what a pivot was and what a triple threat was. We wanted to give them some dribbling techniques and teach them how to set a screen and roll out a screen.”
Moore said the children learned about defense and how to shoot a layup. He added that 70 children participated, and they were mostly ages 4 to 13, but all kids were invited.
“It doesn’t matter where you live,” Moore said. “It’s just something to give them an idea of how to play the game of basketball.”
Moore mentioned that all the kids were ready to learn and talked about their strengths and weaknesses.
“Some of these kids were ready to play,” he said. “Some of these kids could actually play, but you know, a lot of the kids who get the ball tend to shoot it with two hands. Those were some of the little things we’re trying to correct.”
