Clarksdale, Mississippi – At the Clarksdale Advocate, we take pride in supporting our community by showcasing the remarkable businesses and individuals that contribute to its vibrancy. Each week, we spotlight one of these exceptional entities, and this week, we are thrilled to turn our attention to Against the Grain Art Gallery.
In the heart of Clarksdale, Mississippi, stands a testament to creativity and craftsmanship: Against the Grain Art Gallery. Tucked away in the heart of town, this unique establishment has been captivating locals and visitors alike since its opening in June 2023. Owned and operated by the talented artist Bryan Weems, Against the Grain is more than just an art gallery; it’s a hub of diverse artistic expression.
The name “Against the Grain” speaks volumes about Weems’ approach to artistry. He describes himself as a little different, and indeed, his portfolio reflects this mantra. From painting murals to crafting wood sculptures with a chainsaw, Weems defies convention, embracing a wide range of mediums and techniques. His versatility is evident in his ability to seamlessly transition from painting windows murals to creating intricate wood-burning portraits.
He started wood burning when he was 16, just line drawing. He worked at Delta Wire here in town, and then when the ice storm came in ’94, he started doing tree work. For years, he did tree work for the head of the Harvest Society, Jim Auburn, Northeast tree service out of Madison, Mississippi. He then subcontracted for himself until Hurricane Katrina hit. After that, Weems said the reality shows started coming out, and he started watching the chainsaw carving show and figured he could do that. Weems said, “I just started trying it, and really, nobody showed me. I just picked it up and went to doing it and been doing it ever since.”
What sets Against the Grain apart is not just the artwork itself but the experience it offers to patrons. Weems believes that his customers keep returning not only because of their affinity for collecting art but also because they appreciate witnessing his artistic evolution over time. With a humble desire for continuous improvement, Weems strives to refine his craft, honing his skills in anatomy, facial expressions, and beyond.
One of the highlights of Against the Grain’s journey was its involvement in the production of the Hallmark movie “Every Time My Bell Rings It Rings.” Weems contributed two pieces of his artwork to be featured in a scene filmed at St. Mary’s Basilica in Natchez, showcasing the gallery’s ability to deliver custom and distinctive pieces that leave a lasting impression.
As Against the Grain continues to captivate audiences with its innovative creations, Weems invites art enthusiasts to connect with the gallery through social media.
