Three new Coahoma County officials were elected to local offices in the Tuesday, Nov. 7 general election.

Democratic nominee Mario Magsby was elected Sheriff with 3,589 votes (73%). Magsby defeated independent candidate Stacy Lester, who finished with 1,353 votes (27%).

Democratic nominee Sherita Wilson, already a deputy clerk, was elected Chancery Clerk and will succeed Carolyn Parham, who is retiring. Wilson was elected with 3,233 votes (63%), independent Tasheena Galmore finished with 946 votes (19%), and independent Maria Scheider, also a deputy clerk, finished with 932 votes (18%).

Democratic nominee Will Young was elected as the District 5 Supervisor with 542 votes (53%). Independent Tony Young finished with 478 votes (47%). Will Young previously served as the District 5 Supervisor from 2015 to 2019 but lost the 2019 election to incumbent Roosevelt Lee.

All results are expected to be officially certified next week. Candidates provided their thoughts on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

“I feel good. I feel great,” said Magsby as different results were coming in on Tuesday night. “I’m just waiting on the final results.” Magsby said announcements about the transition for him taking over as Sheriff would come at a later date. “We already started the transition,” he said. “We already have things in place.”

Before taking office in January, Magsby will have to go to court. He defeated incumbent Sheriff Charles Jones in the Aug. 8 Democratic Primary.

“Good morning!” Will Young said. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the citizens of Coahoma County for your vote and your support throughout the election process. I would also like to thank my family and friends who stood in support of my campaign. Your vote of confidence is one that I do not take lightly. I am honored that you have given me another opportunity to serve. I look forward to talking with more constituents to address the needs of everyone. It is my desire to remove barriers that will prevent our county from prospering. Thank you! Will Young ‘Where there’s a WILL, there’s a way!'”

Tony Young expressed appreciation toward his supporters. “Good morning,” he said. “First, I would like to thank God for allowing me to run this race. I would like to thank my family, friends, church members who supported, and everyone else who showed support for me during my campaign and the election. I won’t call names because I don’t want to miss anyone, but just know that your support and unwavering love are greatly appreciated. We didn’t get the results we hoped for, but it was a valiant effort. I know God still has a plan for us all, and there is a season for all things. Again, I say thank you and may God continue to bless each and every last one of you!!!”
