Clarksdale, Mississippi – March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about one of the most preventable yet deadly cancers in the United States. Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men and women combined. However, with early detection and proper lifestyle choices, the risk of developing and dying from this disease can be significantly reduced.

Understanding Colon Cancer

Colon cancer starts in the large intestine (colon) or rectum, often beginning as small, noncancerous growths called polyps. Over time, some of these polyps can turn into cancer. Early detection through screenings can remove polyps before they become cancerous, making routine screenings a powerful tool in prevention.

Who Is at Risk?

Colon cancer can affect anyone, but certain factors increase the risk, including:

  • Age – While colon cancer is more common in people over 50, cases among younger adults are on the rise.
  • Family History – Having a parent, sibling, or child with colon cancer raises your risk.
  • Diet & Lifestyle – A diet high in processed meats and low in fiber, combined with lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, and heavy alcohol use, increases the risk.
  • Medical Conditions – People with inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis have a higher risk.

Screening Saves Lives

One of the most effective ways to prevent colon cancer is through regular screenings. The American Cancer Society recommends that adults at average risk begin regular screening at age 45. Those with a family history or other risk factors should consult their doctor about starting earlier.

Common screening methods include:

  • Colonoscopy (every 10 years) – The gold standard in screening, allowing doctors to detect and remove polyps.
  • Stool Tests (annually or every three years) – Non-invasive options that check for hidden blood or abnormal DNA in stool samples.
  • CT Colonography (every 5 years) – A specialized imaging test to detect polyps.

Signs and Symptoms

In its early stages, colon cancer may not show any symptoms, which is why screening is essential. However, as the disease progresses, symptoms may include:

  • Changes in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea)
  • Blood in stool or rectal bleeding
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue and weakness

If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.

Prevention: What You Can Do

While some risk factors like age and genetics can’t be changed, lifestyle choices play a significant role in prevention:
Eat a high-fiber diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Limit red and processed meats and avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
Stay physically active – Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week.
Don’t smoke, and if you do, seek help to quit.
Maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise.

Spreading Awareness

Colon Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to educate loved ones and encourage preventive screenings. Many organizations, like the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and the American Cancer Society, offer resources, fundraising events, and free screening programs.
