Film Industry Panel

Clarksdale, Mississippi – On Friday, the Delta Blues Museum played host to an illuminating conversation about Mississippi’s growing role in independent film. The panel, Mississippi Film Future: Attracting Blockbusters and Building a Local Workforce, brought together some of the state’s most active film advocates and creators as part of the Clarksdale Culture Capital initiative and a weekend-long celebration of the film Sinners.

Moderated by Jasmine Williams of Sipp Talk Media, the panel featured Layla Young of StoryWorks Theatre Company, Nolan Dean of Film Delta, Nina Parikh Director of the Mississippi Film Office, and filmmaker and beauty industry leader Antonio Tarell. Together, they painted a compelling picture of Mississippi’s potential as a film destination—and the opportunities for local residents to join in the work.

While blockbuster productions often require resources Mississippi doesn’t yet have, panelists emphasized that the state does offer what many filmmakers crave: authentic locations, cash rebate incentives, and deeply rooted stories. “You don’t need a degree for this industry,” said Nina Parikh. “You just need passion and the interest in collaboration.”

The discussion also shed light on overlooked career paths outside of directing and acting. From cosmetology to costume design, logistics to lighting, there’s a place for everyone. “This is an art form just like all things—even being a security agent,” Nolan Dean reminded the crowd.

Antonio Tarell reflected on the humility and resilience required in independent filmmaking. “You go in with expectations,” he said, “but the best part is finding collaborators who help bring the story to life.”

Layla Young highlighted her appreciation for StoryWorks’ ongoing mission to nurture local talent in the Delta. “I’ve always believed that your gifts will make room for you. Being a part of StoryWorks has taught me that you can carve out your own space in this industry. When you have a community with a common goal in mind. So to be invited on the panel is an honor and a  privilege because I represent more than myself.”

“There’s a job for everything,” Williams concluded. And now, there’s a clearer path for Mississippians ready to tell their stories.
