Clarksdale, Mississippi – The Mean Green Marching Machine of Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) made history with a powerful 13-minute performance inside the Capital One Arena during the 60th Presidential Inauguration Parade in Washington, D.C., on January 20. Invited in December, the band’s participation marked a proud moment for the university and its home state of Mississippi, as well as a historic opportunity to showcase the cultural significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

This event required extensive planning and financial support. The total cost of the trip, including travel, accommodations, meals, and equipment, amounted to $350,000. Determined to make this experience accessible to all students, MVSU launched a GoFundMe campaign that successfully raised over $300,000, thanks to contributions from alumni, community members, and supporters nationwide.

“This is not just a moment of pride for our university but for the entire state of Mississippi,” said Dr. Jerryl Briggs, President of MVSU. “It is an opportunity to showcase our legacy, celebrate our culture, and invest in the future leaders of our community. This participation also allows students to engage in the peaceful transition of power and gain global exposure while celebrating the university’s 75th anniversary.”

The Mean Green Marching Machine’s legacy extends far beyond this inaugural performance. According to the scholl website, In 1965, they became the first HBCU band to march in the Tournament of Roses Parade. They returned to Pasadena in 1968 and performed at President Richard Nixon’s inauguration in 1969. These historic milestones reflect their enduring role as cultural ambassadors for Mississippi and the HBCU community.

While the performance was a historic moment for MVSU, it was not without controversy. Reactions were mixed, with university officials celebrating the band’s opportunity while some critics argued that participating in former President Donald Trump’s inauguration contradicted the mission and values of HBCUs.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves supported the band’s efforts, sharing the GoFundMe campaign on social media, writing, “Looking forward to seeing @MVSUDEVILS’ Mean Green Marching Machine represent our state in @realDonaldTrump’s inaugural parade!”

Despite differing opinions, the Mean Green Marching Machine delivered an unforgettable performance, leaving an indelible mark on both the audience and the students who participated. The experience is sure to remain a cherished memory and a story for future generations, solidifying the band’s place in history as a symbol of resilience, cultural pride, and excellence.
