Clarksdale, MS – The Clarksdale chapter of Moms Demand Action (MDA) held a powerful and heartfelt event aimed at raising awareness about gun violence and honoring the lives lost to it. The gathering, held under sunny skies and perfect weather, brought together survivors, community leaders, families, and supporters wearing orange—the national color for gun violence prevention.
The event opened with a joint prayer led by Rev. Shurlock and Rev. Webb, setting the tone for a day of unity, remembrance, and advocacy. Local vendors such as Grandma Neicy’s Kitchen LLC and Sisters Sowing Seeds were present to provide support and refreshments, while a live DJ kept the atmosphere uplifting despite the event’s somber purpose.
Several speakers addressed the crowd, sharing personal testimonies, expert insights, and messages of hope:
- Kaleigh Michael, a nationally certified counselor with six years of experience in the mental health field, spoke about the impact of gun violence on mental health and the importance of community healing.
- Latasha Turner, Coahoma County High School’s Math Curriculum Director, introduced her husband, Principal Chris Turner, who shared heartfelt words on supporting youth and preventing violence through education.
- Lieutenant Joseph Wide of the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Department and Lieutenant Alvin Coley of the Clarksdale Police Department each addressed the current state of gun violence in the region and urged community collaboration in making Clarksdale safer.
Survivor stories provided the most emotional moments of the day:
- Jackie Williams shared her experience of losing her son to gun violence in 2015.
- Rose Jordan Conrad, an MDA member, spoke with strength and sorrow about losing two of her sons to gun violence—one in 2021 and another in 2023.
- Rashida Smith also bravely shared her story of losing a child to gun violence.
- Kayrnyia Thomas, only 10 years old, moved many in the crowd as she spoke about losing her father, Caste Larry, to gun violence.
- Ms. Hill offered words about the devastating loss of her son, adding to the chorus of voices calling for change.
Prizes were given away throughout the event, creating moments of joy amid the heavy testimonies. Attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose, many inspired to become more involved in the fight to end gun violence.
Moms Demand Action continues its mission to honor victims, support survivors, and advocate for common-sense gun safety laws—reminding the community that change begins with action.
