Clarksdale, Mississippi – Voters in the towns of Lula, Friars Point, and Jonestown turned out on Tuesday to cast their ballots in closely watched municipal elections. Unofficial results, which include absentee and affidavit ballots, reveal a shift in leadership across several offices.
Lula Mayoral Race
In Lula, incumbent Mayor Robert Monroe appears to have secured another term with 52 votes, defeating challenger Nancy Johnson, who received 37 votes.
Friars Point Mayor and Aldermen
A political shake-up came to Friars Point, where Charles Fair defeated incumbent Ralph Scott with 144 votes to Scott’s 110. Arthur Scott trailed with 20 votes. Fair, a longtime community advocate, is the projected winner and is expected to bring fresh leadership to the mayor’s office.
For the Board of Aldermen, voters selected five individuals from a competitive field of twelve candidates. The projected winners are:
- Gayle Brady – 169 votes
- Sylvester Stokes Sr – 129 votes
- Sheronia Marshall – 123 votes
- Dennis Duckworth – 116 votes
- Christie Bee – 115 votes
These five individuals are poised to take office and help guide the direction of Friars Point’s municipal policies and development.
Jonestown Mayor and Aldermen
In Jonestown, a four-way mayoral race ended with Columbus Russell Jr. emerging as the projected winner—making Jonestown history as the youngest mayor ever elected. Russell earned 136 votes, ahead of Kintala Johnson (74), incumbent Vivian S. Burnett (57), and Unta Wiley (51). His win signals a change in leadership, as voters opted for new direction in the town’s highest office.
Jonestown voters also selected five aldermen from a large field of candidates. The projected winners are:
- Terrance Holmes – 272 votes
- Subrenia Johnson – 260 votes
- Tasheena N. Galmore – 236 votes
- Metisha Johnson – 212 votes
- LaShasa S. Griffin – 196 votes
These candidates are expected to bring diverse perspectives and renewed energy to the Jonestown Board of Aldermen.
These unofficial results reflect the will of the voters as of Tuesday night and mark a new chapter for these Mississippi Delta towns. As each community moves forward, attention now turns to the swearing-in of newly elected officials and the important next steps in addressing local priorities.
