Washington, D.C. – – United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announced that 32 nonprofit organizations in Mississippi will receive $3.8 million through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for Fiscal Year 2024 under the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP). This program provides funding for physical security enhancements and other security-related activities for eligible nonprofit organizations, including houses of worship, that are at high risk of a terrorist attack.
Congressman Thompson has been a long-standing advocate for the NSGP. In 2019, Congress passed the Securing American Nonprofit Organizations Against Terrorism Act (P.L. No: 116-108), sponsored by Congressman Thompson, which formally authorized the NSGP, increased its funding, and expanded eligibility to nonprofit organizations both within and outside urban areas. In December 2022, Congress enacted the Nonprofit Security Grant Program Improvement Act of 2022 (P.L. No: 117-263), also sponsored by Congressman Thompson, which authorized additional NSGP funding and increased the program’s impact and effectiveness.
“The Nonprofit Security Grant Program is vital in safeguarding against the escalating threats of violence faced by nonprofit organizations, especially houses of worship, nationwide. As terrorist threats targeting these organizations continue to rise, it is imperative that communities in Mississippi fully leverage the NSGP. I am proud that 32 nonprofit organizations in our state will receive this crucial funding in FY 2024, and I urge all other eligible organizations to actively explore how these essential resources can enhance their security and actively protect their communities.”
