Clarksdale, Mississippi – The 2024 J.T. Grey and Elgton Jenkins Football Camp was a resounding success, drawing 150-160 enthusiastic campers eager to learn from some of the best in the business. The camp, held at Clarksdale High School, was not just a training ground for budding football talent but also a celebration of community spirit and sportsmanship.
The event featured a stellar lineup of NFL players and coaches who dedicated their time to mentor the young athletes. Among them was Stephen Adegoke, the safeties coach for the Houston Texans, who provided invaluable insights into defensive play. Jeffrey Simmons, a standout player with the Tennessee Titans, shared his experiences and offered tips on excelling at the professional level. Adding to the wealth of knowledge was Avery Rohenwrick, an assistant coach from Mississippi State, who helped sharpen the campers’ skills.
Volunteers played a crucial role in the camp’s success, with members of the Clarksdale High Beta Club stepping up to assist with various activities. The Clarksdale High and Coahoma County football teams, along with the Clarksdale Coahoma County Panthers pee wee football team, also participated, creating a vibrant atmosphere of learning and camaraderie.
A highlight of the camp was the motivational speech delivered by Dr. Tywanna Smith. A former professional basketball player in Europe and an Ole Miss basketball alumna, Dr. Smith is now a sports business manager. She inspired the campers with her story of perseverance and success, emphasizing the importance of hard work and dedication both on and off the field.
The camp also saw a special presentation by Dr. Matthews, the superintendent of Clarksdale High School. In a heartfelt ceremony, he announced the renaming of the CHS football stadium to honor the camp’s namesakes. The stadium will now be known as The Elgton Jenkins Football Stadium, the fieldhouse as J.T. Grey Fieldhouse, and the football field as Jesse Murphee Football Field. This gesture not only celebrated the achievements of Jenkins, Grey, and Murphee but also underscored the community’s commitment to fostering local talent.
The 2024 J.T. Grey and Elgton Jenkins Football Camp was more than just a training event; it was a testament to the power of community and the enduring impact of sports on young lives. As campers left with new skills and unforgettable memories, the camp’s legacy of excellence and inspiration was firmly established.
