Clarksdale, Mississippi – In March 2023, Corporal Eric Hunter joined the Clarksdale Police Department (CPD) with a mission to serve and protect. His dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence have not gone unnoticed, earning him the prestigious title of CPD’s “Policeman of the Year.”

For Corporal Hunter, the journey to law enforcement was anything but straightforward. Born and raised in the Mississippi Delta, he initially had no intention of becoming a police officer. In fact, he recalls disliking the police during his youth. However, a lack of job opportunities for young men in the Delta pushed him to explore new possibilities.

“I tried fast food restaurants and multiple other businesses, but none would hire me,” Hunter explained. “In 2017, I became a certified nursing assistant, making just $7.25 an hour. I kept searching for better opportunities, but they were hard to come by.”

Determined to make a change, Hunter decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. In 2018, despite facing rejection from various police departments, he refused to give up. “I didn’t let that discourage me,” he said. “I sent myself to the police academy so that no department could hold me back.”

Hunter entered the academy in 2019, a challenging yet transformative experience. Starting with nearly 50 cadets, only 20 graduated, and Hunter was among them. “Graduating was the most exciting moment of my life,” he recalled.

After completing the academy, Hunter began his law enforcement career in Ruleville, where he served for four years and earned the Officer of the Year award. In March 2023, he brought his experience and passion to Clarksdale, where his impact has been significant.

At the start of 2024, Hunter was part of a special operation that contributed to a noticeable decrease in the city’s crime rate. He credits his success to the mentorship and camaraderie of his colleagues. “Working for CPD has been a decent experience,” he shared. “I’ve worked with some pretty good guys who taught me certain things.”

Hunter’s approach to policing is grounded in empathy and respect. “My goal each day when I get to work is to make sure I make it home safe and that other citizens are making it home safely, because even though I have the badge, I’m still human too. Respect is the best thing a person can give.”

Reflecting on his journey, Hunter emphasizes the importance of perseverance. From struggling to find work to becoming a celebrated officer, his story is a testament to resilience and determination.

Congratulations to Corporal Eric Hunter, CPD’s Policeman of the Year, for his unwavering commitment to serving the Clarksdale community and making it a safer place for all.
