Clarksdale, Mississippi, January 31, 2024 – Students and faculty at Coahoma Community College are gearing up to participate in the annual SkillsUSA Week, a nationwide celebration that spotlights the importance of career and technical education (CTE). This event, taking place from February 5-9, 2024, brings together over 380,000 SkillsUSA members across the country, promoting skill development and readiness for future careers.

SkillsUSA, as one of the prominent U.S. career and technical student organizations, is dedicated to championing the skilled trades. The organization serves as a student-led partnership between education and industry, shaping a skilled workforce vital for our nation’s prosperity. With chapters thriving in middle schools, high schools, and college/postsecondary institutions nationwide, SkillsUSA empowers students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders, and responsible community members.

Coahoma Community College is actively participating in SkillsUSA Week to promote career and technical education at the local, state, and national levels. This annual celebration allows state associations, advisors, and student members the opportunity to showcase SkillsUSA programs and activities while emphasizing the significance of skilled trades.

As part of the week-long celebration, Coahoma Community College’s SkillsUSA students will embark on a journey to Jackson, MS, for the 2024 State Skills Championship from April 1-4, 2024. The students will compete in various programs, including Culinary Arts, Masonry, Residential Carpentry, Welding, Collision & Repair, Automotive Mechanics, and HVAC, challenging their skills against students from other community colleges in Mississippi. 

SkillsUSA Week Activities at Coahoma Community College:

– Recognition Day – Monday, February 5, 2024: A day dedicated to honoring instructors, students, and administrators who have contributed to the success of SkillsUSA. Snacks will be served for all students and instructors, providing an opportunity to inform and educate career technical students about SkillsUSA.

– Give-Back Day – Wednesday, February 7, 2024: SkillsUSA students will rally around the community by engaging in service projects. Volunteering at the Care Station in Clarksdale, MS, they aim to make a positive impact through giving back.

– SkillsUSA Day – Thursday, February 8, 2024: The entire Career Technical Division will proudly wear SkillsUSA t-shirts to promote SkillsUSA Day, highlighting the unity and spirit of the organization.
