Clarksdale native Dorothy Cleark Murry wanted to encourage people of all ages to try something new and was able to get her message across by writing a children’s book. Murry’s book, “The Kid Who Ate Strawberry Yogurt,” came out on August 17, 2023. Writeous Publishing Co. published the book. The book is for everyone, and the reading age is from when they are babies until they are 18 years old.

“The Kid Who Ate Strawberry Yogurt” is about a child who was used to eating his favorite snacks when his mother bought something new for him to try. When asked who inspired the story, Murry said, “A child who was reluctant to try anything new.”

Murry said readers have enjoyed the book. “I am excited to see my book published and to see everyone reading it,” she said. “I have introduced and read my book to students at different schools. The adults who have purchased my book said, ‘Their family enjoys reading it.’”

Murry is the daughter of George Washington and Lillie B. Cleark. She was born in Clarksdale, graduated from Clarksdale High School, and then from Coahoma Community College with a degree in Associate in Art. She is currently a student at Southern Miss, majoring in child and family services with an emphasis on child development. She is working at ELOHIM Childcare & Learning Center.

“Growing up in Clarksdale has led me to the road to where I am today,” Murry said. “I attend Macedonia Apostolic Church of the Living God. I started as a Sunday school teacher for children. That paved the way for me.”

Murry has two biological sons, Trey and Troy Cleark, whom she dedicated her book to. Her husband’s name is James L. Murry. “God has blessed me with a blended family,” Murry said. From her blended family, Murry has two daughters, Tonya and Sonya Rembert; one son, Raymond Rembert Sr.; three grandchildren, Radreona Rembert, Raymond Rembert Jr., and Lakino Woodson Jr.; and one daughter-in-law, Shirquita W. Rembert.

“I love the time I spend with my family and friends,” Murry said. “I love board games.”
