Clarksdale, Mississippi — Coahoma Community College (CCC) proudly presents its latest exhibition, showcasing the creative journey of students in the Drawing I and Design I courses. Each semester, CCC art students—whether art majors or passionate elective seekers—are given the opportunity to develop their skills and explore artistic expression. This semester’s exhibit celebrates both the growth and diversity of talent within the CCC art community.

Drawing I and Design I courses invite students to step into the world of artistic creation, developing fundamental skills in two-dimensional and three-dimensional design. These courses are accessible to both art majors and non-majors, including CCC faculty, staff, and community members who wish to engage with the world of drawing.

This exhibition highlights a collection of unique artworks created by CCC students across various backgrounds and fields of study. Students in Drawing I start with a foundational self-portrait, using only a mirror as their guide. This initial work captures each student’s starting skill level, offering a basis for comparison with their later self-portraits, which reflect the perceptive drawing skills they develop over the course. The “before” and “after” portraits illustrate the impressive progression that students experience.

Design I students delve into the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design throughexplorations with both wet and dry black-and-white media. From representing monochromatic still life arrangements to transforming organic shapes into geometric compositions inspired by renowned artist Kehinde Wiley, students learn techniques that lay the groundwork for their future endeavors in visual art.

These essential skills pave the way for success in other visual media, from photography to graphic design, sculpture, and even film. Beyond personal growth, students also build competitive portfolios, which enable them to pursue scholarships and succeed in events like the Juke Joint Festival Art competition held each spring.

The Drawing and Design exhibition serves as a testament to the transformative power of art education and showcases the boundless potential of students in our community. This exhibit is free and open to the public. Come experience the artistic evolution of CCC’s students as they share their talents with the Coahoma community.
