Mound Bayou, MS 38762, September 20, 2023:  DeVoyce C. Morris, Chairman of the Mound Bayou Historic Preservation Commission, announced today that “Preserving Our Legacy:  Let’s Bank on It!” fundraising event will kick off on Thursday, September 28, at 4 pm, in front of the Mound Bayou Bank building.  This event is being held to elicit the public’s support in renovating the Mound Bayou Bank building and turning it into a community center.

“Dr. Sean Buckelew, Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, will be our special guest,” said Morris.  “We will erect a banner on the building that gives the public ways in which they can donate and support us in the effort to preserve the only commercial building still standing since the founding of this historic town,” continued Morris. “We are extremely elated to have Dr. Buckelew and MDAH’s unparalleled support of this project,” stated Morris.

“In addition to the erecting of the banner, we will have music by Jake and the Pearl Street Jumpers,” stated Darryl Johnson, one of the commissioners.  “We are planning for a fun afternoon, but with a serious purpose,” continued Johnson.  “We are in need of funds to preserve this very important piece of history; and, we hope this awareness event will encourage individuals to help support our efforts,” he stated.

There is no cost associated with this event and the public is invited to come out for an afternoon of fun.  For ways to donate to this cause, please visit the website: www.mdah.ms.gov, or call DeVoyce C. Morris at 662-719-0090.
